Durer's Eel
Eve, Durer 1507 (Detail): The leaf in the serpent’s mouth operates as a visual pun of a fin, revealing the menstrual fish. The reptile is shown with teeth in the lower jaw - anatomic of the eel. Epigraphically the tooth denotes Sirius. Finally, Durer paints the fish with a red crown - symbolic of Eve’s menstrual blood, equated with angelic defilement (Refer to Appendix 7).
